Recently, our country has been impacted with immense changes politically, socially, and racially.
On June 12th, 2016, our community was rocked by the Pulse massacre that claimed the lives of 49 victims, the vast majority of whom were LGBTQ people of color. Shock and horror turned to grief and anger, and a deep resilience emerged from survivors, the victims’ loved ones, Orlando residents, and LGBTQ people and our allies around the world.
We also share our mourning in June with the 9 black and African-American victims whose lives were abruptly taken on June 17, 2015 during a prayer service in Charleston, SC.
Join Equality Florida for our first convening of leaders from the LGBTQ and communities of color in Jacksonville. During this summit, we will discuss issues facing our communities and discuss ways to reach restorative, impactful, and meaningful change. Can I count on you to join us?
Communities of color and the LGBTQ community face specific and immediate challenges in Florida. People of color are more than 2x more likely to be the victim of gun violence in our country. Now more than ever, we must listen, organize, and prepare for the road ahead.
This year marks Equality Florida's 20th Anniversary of securing equality and justice for LGBTQ Floridians. Not only will we refuse to allow our victories to be turned back, we will continue to make progress toward full recognition of our humanity and our equality.
